Hope: A 2018 Invocation

January 7, 2018

Looking back at 2017, it was filled with peaks of intensity, valleys of challenges and simply put, new terrain. Ultimately, for me, it was a bridge crossing over into a year that blew the door open in the earliest hours. 2018 it seems, was not willing to slip quietly in through the night.

Whatever awaits in the unfolding of 2018 - all the ranges of human emotion to be experienced personally, collectively, the highs and the lows - let the unifying undertone be HOPE.

If you missed Oprah’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes tonight here’s the part that resonated with me the deepest:

“In my career, what I’ve always tried my best to do, whether on television or through film, is to say something about how men and women really behave: to say how we experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere, and how we overcome. And I’ve interviewed and portrayed people who’ve withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you, but the one quality all of them seem to share is an ability to maintain hope for a brighter morning — even during our darkest nights.”

In the words of Sidney Poitier as quoted by Oprah, “Amen, amen, Amen, amen.”
