Inanna’s Descent

March 29, 2018

There is a 5,000+ year old myth told in prose about the Sumerian Goddess Inanna and her descent through the 7 gates of the underworld.

Furious, her sister, Goddess of the underworld, demanded that the gates be closed, requiring Inanna to remove an article of clothing (a divine attribute) to cross each gate. Arriving to her sister disrobed, seemingly powerless and at her knees she is then killed and hung on a hook.

There she hung, until her rescue, resurrection and re-emergence. An epic myth of seasonal cycles, of transformation, of death and rebirth, of descent and ascension, of Venus’s journey across the sky between morning star and evening star.

As of late it seems like my life is resembling Inanna’s journey more and more. Upon each gate I hand over a parcel of what was my perceived sense of self: independence, home, relationship, business, my health. The physical un-wellness (as inflammation) has been the hardest. Sometimes it seems that Spirit, from the macro cosmic perspective, has a bigger narrative in mind.

Sometimes, we walk through darkness to meet our shadow. Sometimes, we are stripped of everything so we can align deeper with our truth and our potential. Sometimes, we must be humbled to discover our true source of power.

To be clear, this moment of sharing is not about despair or about disease, it is about jumping into the rabbit hole of hope and renewal. It is all part of the journey and about our willingness to embody the transformation - where divine timing and divine order lead the way.
